Mini-Course: Catuḥ-ślokī (Four Key Verses) of the Bhagavad Gītā
The Bhagavad Gītā is like a delicious veggie burger of transcendental wisdom—drawing from the essence of the Vedas and Upaniṣads. Its middle six chapters (7–12) are the essence of that essence, and at the very center—Chapter 9 and the opening of Chapter 10—Kṛṣṇa bears His heart.
Bhagavad Gītā Chapter 9: A Memorization & Study Course
Among the 700 verses of the Bhagavad Gītā, Chapter 9 holds a unique place—it is where Kṛṣṇa most directly reveals His heart, making it one of my favorite chapters. In fact, it is the most quoted chapter.
About your teacher
Nityananda Chandra began memorizing verses in 1999, but it wasn’t until later that he made significant progress in his practice. While living as a monk in downtown Portland, he once saw elementary school students reciting Chapter 15 of the Bhagavad Gītā from memory. It struck him: if these children could do it, why couldn’t he?
Not long after, he discovered a key insight—that it is far easier to retain verses when memorized as part of a continuous sequence, rather than as isolated selections.
Hi 🙋♂️ I’m Chandra, (AKA Nityananda Chandra)
I began my journey into the spirituality of the East over 30 years ago. Since then I have spent many years studying Vedic philosophy in ashrams around the USA and India. I have been teaching topics such as karma, Ayurveda, the guṇas of yoga, meditation, kirtan, Bhagavad Gītā, and so on.
My teaching journey has led me to speak at many universities, multinational companies, yoga studios, retreats, and in humble settings of homes and 12-step programs. Teaching is my passion, and helping others help themselves is what inspires me.
I have been teaching people of all ages how to memorize chapters of the Gita for 15+ years. By the inspiration of my spiritual guides so far I have memorized chapters 7, 9, 12, & 15 of Bhagavad Gītā, & half of chapter 10. I also have memorized the 34 verses Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 1.2, part of ŚB 1.7, and an assortment of other verses. Some future plans include Kunti’s prayers, Śrī Manaḥ Śikṣa, BG Ch. 5, and Śrī Brahma Saṁhitā. (If you have some inspiration that is not on that list, let me know and we can do it together)
